The Solution, your body needs

What Are The Swedish Massage Techniques?

Effleurage (Long Gliding Strokes)

Massage therapist applies slow, continuous strokes from distal to proximal along limbs and back. Rhythmic glide promotes venous-lymphatic return and warms superficial fascia for deeper work. Progressive layering reduces sympathetic arousal and prepares erector spinae and gluteal tissues for kneading.

Kneading, Lifting, Squeezing

The therapist lifts and compresses muscle bellies such as trapezius, gastrocnemius, and deltoid. Cyclic loading improves pliability, mobilizes interstitial fluid, and disperses minor adhesions. Restored compliance enhances shoulder and calf mechanics during daily movement.

Friction (Circular or Transverse)

Practitioner delivers small, focused strokes over thicker tissues like the lumbar paraspinals, forearm extensors, and iliotibial tract margins. Local shear increases microcirculation and reduces tender nodules without exceeding comfort. Controlled friction refines glide between fascia and muscle for smoother motion.

Tapotement

Therapist uses light, rhythmic percussion across the thorax, arms, and thighs. Brief stimulation heightens proprioceptive input and can either energize or calm depending on tempo. Balanced application refreshes fatigued tissues without provoking soreness.

Vibration & Shaking (Oscillatory Soothing)

Clinician introduces fine vibrations and gentle segmental shaking around the cervical spine, scapulothoracic region, and lumbar area. Low-amplitude oscillation reduces guarding and encourages parasympathetic settling. Soft resonance improves breath ease and releases residual holding patterns.

Jean is amazing! I am so thankful for her. She saves my neck, back, and shoulders on the regular. Came in with a migraine today and after seeing her, it’s gone. The needling helped so much with the tension and stiffness. Savior!!!

Questions From Our Patients

Swedish vs. Deep Tissue, which one is better for you?

L
K
Swedish massage is ideal when your goal is relaxation, nervous-system recovery, and relief from mild to moderate tension. If you’re dealing with stubborn “knots,” chronic trigger points, or restricted range of motion, your RMT may recommend blending in targeted techniques or booking a dedicated deep-tissue/trigger-point session on a future visit.

Is Swedish massage suitable for everyone?

L
K
The short answer is yes. If you have acute injuries, infections, blood clots, or other medical concerns, please check with your physician and tell your RMT so we can adapt the session safely.

Will Swedish massage get rid of knots?

L
K
It can soften and reduce superficial knots. Deep or chronic trigger points may need targeted work; your RMT can advise on the best plan.

How often should I schedule a massage?

L
K
It varies by your needs. Many people go once a month for general relaxation. If you’re dealing with high stress or muscle tension, you might benefit from more frequent visits.

Is Swedish massage covered by insurance?

L
K
Treatments provided by a Registered Massage Therapist are eligible under many extended health plans; Juniper offers direct billing to many insurers.

How should I prepare for a relaxation massage?

L
K
Arrive a few minutes early, stay hydrated, and eat light beforehand. Think about any areas you want special attention, and share that with your therapist so they can tailor the session to you.
